Who Will Help Him?

The man on the park bench yelled, “Do you have any water?”

I yelled back, “There’s a deli across the street. Try there.”

“But I have no money,” he declared.

He was dirty, and his clothes were tattered.

I imagined a robber using a trick to get my money.

I didn’t want to be too close.

Quickly I drove away in my big, shiny car.

Soon thoughts about the man on the park bench filled my head.

Perhaps he was a street person who had lost his job, was evicted from his home, had only the clothes on his back.

Perhaps he was stuck in his situation with no way out. Who would help him?

Then I prayed aloud in shame. “Forgive me, Lord.”

“…Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40, KJV
